Through all of the things I've taken on in the past handful of years I've always tried to keep a motivated and positive frame of mind. It can be easy to allow life to take its toll on your mind, your body and your training. If I ever started to feel like I was losing steam or started to feel like I might not make it to the finish line there was one quote that I could rely on to fire me back up.

I am building a fire, and everyday I train, I add more fuel. At just the right moment, I light the match.
— Mia Hamm

I read this and become instantly motivated, energized and have razor-like vision for the things I want to attain. I WANT to put in the work to get what I dream of having. I am reminded to refuse to sit back and to instead choose to light up my life. I believe that training can be a way to practice this frame of mind. Once you've caught on to your ability to alter the road you travel this energy will flow into the rest of your life.

As a personal trainer, there are a few things that I love to hear from my clients including them reaching their goals, feeling healthier, gaining strength, losing weight…the list goes on.  There is one thing however that goes above and beyond this and that is when a client tells me that their life is changing.

My. Heart. Expands.

Here's the thing…I knew those words were going to come from my client because I saw the fire brewing when they pushed themselves for the last 100 meters of their row. I saw the fire when they pulled air into their lungs to grind out their last deadlift. I saw the smile take over their face when they were drenched with sweat and completed what they thought was impossible.

They are building a fire.

When Mia Hamm said those words she was referring to the hours upon hours of training that lead to game day. She was referring to every single decision she made that brought her to this moment. Her words go above the difficult training however and reveal a level of dedication. When working hard to achieve something your every thought and every move is either another step TOWARDS or another step AWAY from your goals.

You have the power to make those decisions.

Here Is HOW The Match Is Put to Use

Training - It is within your power and control to:

  •  set your alarm and wake up to go to the gym.
  • push the boundaries of your comfort zone.
  • choose a difficult workout that will test you and create change.

Career - It is within your power and control to:

  • further your education.
  • apply for your dream job.
  • ask for a raise.

Relationships - It is within your power and control to:

  • include those in your life who bring you happiness and joy.
  • appreciate the moments you spend with your loved ones.
  • grow healthy and loving relationships.

Goals - It is within your power and control to:

  • create goals.
  • create a plan and follow through.
  • ...not give up.

At the end of the day YOU CHOOSE. No one will do it for you. Your trainer and loved ones would love to make these decisions for you, but then what will YOU have achieved? As for others around you? They're all too concerned with themselves. If you're sitting there, waiting for someone to motivate you…no one is coming and for some people that is terrifying. You have to make the decision to change your own life.

If you decide to light the match I promise there will be fire.
